Origin of Goa Carnival –

The Goa Carnival is one of the inevitable parts of the historic heritage of the Portuguese left behind in Goa. In fact, the Goa Carnival is the representation of the vibrant culture of Goa. It was first started in Goa by its former rulers who celebrated it raucously by throwing oranges, lemons, eggs, sand-filled gloves and mud at the passers by. From windows they also used to throw out old pans, pots and other utensils from the kitchen. Most probably they did these things to get rid of the dirty and old, prior to the Lenten fast.

Great fights dotted the streets in Goa with wax lemons, eggs made of Plaster of Paris, beans and corncobs. The former rulers also used wooden spoons and brooms to deal with the blows. On this occasion people also used to eat uncontrollably and overindulge on mouthwatering delights whereas the convents gave out pastries and cakes to every body.
